Warmachine Battle Report: Morghoul vs. Harbringer!

Monday night past I'd reserved a table for some Warmahordes action, and was lucky enough to get to play the club's meanest member, Sean Nayden and his Harbringer led Menoth force!

Friday Blather - Upcoming events...what to paint?!

Friday has snuck up on me again already. As I get older, the weeks fly by faster and faster!

This week I spent a lot of time pondering changes to my Skorne army; read a bit of Domination and am considering how to use Battle Engines and some new Legion stuff; an upcoming Warhammer 40k event; some upcoming Flames of War events; and diving in to Fantasy a bit more!

(Whoops! I thought I'd posted this on Friday, mea culpa!)

Brothers Grim Steamroller Tournament!

This past Saturday Dec 3rd I attended my first ever Steamroller tournament: 35 points of Warmachine/Hordes at Brothers Grim Gaming on Long Island...a GREAT place that I can't recommend highly enough. Fully painted armies were not required, but I recruited my wife and we burnt the midnight oil Thursday and Friday nights, and got everything reasonably well painted, but had no time for proper basing. It was very nice to show up with everything looking pretty!

Here I'll post some pics of the army, and have some kind of report on the battles I fought and thoughts on my first Steamroller event!

Warhmahordes Battle Report: pMorghoul vs. Terminus!

My good friend and Ordo-mate Tom and I have been working on our respective lists for upcoming tournaments, and have gotten a fair number of Vassal games in the last few weeks. We finished a game last night that I actually remembered to take a few screenshots of, so here's a quick battle report!

Planetary Empires: Battle for Thanatos!

Here at Ordo Ineptus we've just started our first Planetary Empires campaign: The Battle for Thanatos!

Beastmen: A load of Bull, with a side of Goat!

There’s been a bit of discussion amongst my Ordo Ineptus brethren about Beastmen. When the Army Book came out (was it really 2 years ago?!) we all felt more than a little let down. I personally was just finishing an all Khorne Minotaur army using the old book, and was very disappointed that something like that could not be done again. Now this was in 7th edition, and there’s some communal experience with 8th edition now, so the question we had was, do Beastmen still suck?

He doesn't suck, but he does have a pot-belly!

Battle Report: 1750 Orks versus Dark Eldar!

I got a “pick-up game” the other night. I started very late, and was far too tired for serious play, but though I often get the crap beaten out of me when playing too tired to think, I believe it helps my brain learn what to do without me having to think about it…I tell myself that means I’ll play better when I really can think about it, but maybe it just makes things worse.

Either way, I got a fun game in with an unexpected result…..WAAAAAGH!

I have MEQ envy...

I admit it. Sometimes (hell, most times) I’m across the table from someone that has the benefit of getting saves on what seems like everything I throw at them. I do 20 wounds? He saves 19. Screw you man!

Well, I’ve decided…I’m going to shelve my long-unfulfilled plans for a Space Wolf army, but I’m going to satisfy my desire to have a stat-line full of 4s and an armour save. What army did I choose?

I want my Squats back!

Ordo Ineptus Warhammer 40k Tournament - Xenos Represent!

This weekend was the first of what I hope to be monthly "small" tournaments at the FLGS where Ordo Ineptus meets. We'll be cycling through different game systems, this one was Warhammer 40k!

Battle Report! 2000pts Blood Angels vs. Space Wolves!

Yes, Blood Angels! I sometimes get 3+ envy, and want to try new things, and was inspired by something I heard on an 11th company podcast.

My good friend Sean Nayden used to play a very Dreadnought and Drop Pod heavy Vulkan based army, with a fair amount of success. Neil said something about making an all Drop Pod Blood Angels army...those ASM get Pods for free, ya know!...and I put two and two together...

Ordo Ineptus: lots of upcoming excitement!

My local club is called Ordo Ineptus, named for our surefire ability to roll 1s when it hurts the most. Club events have been kind of minimal the last few months, but all that's about to change!

Fantasy Battle Report: Vampires versus Ogre Kingdoms!

For the first time in almost a year and a half I played Warhammer Fantasy! I used the Vampire Counts army I detailed here, and met with mixed success. I was quite pleased with how the army worked...it's one I'll definitely tweak a bit and continue using...maybe even break my tradition and completely paint it!

Return to Fantasy: El Duque Azul Back From The Dead!

It's been about a year since I've played ANY Fantasy...but all that's about to change! Why? Read on!

Dealing with Grey Knights

I hate to be bitter and jaded...but I am. I'm already sick and tired of reading about Necrons: Stormlord, Entropy, Night Fight, Tesla...shut up already!

I wanted to go back to complaining about Grey Knights. I mean, I'm still complaining about the last broken codex, and everyone else has moved on to the next one? No sir...around here, I'll complain until I'm damned good and ready to start complaining about something else!

Seriously, I had posted something on the 11th Company Forum awhile back in response to a discussion they had in Episode 91. I thought I'd re-post it here to share with more and hopefully get more feedback. Nothing earth-shattering, just my standard Wall of Text™,  describing how I'd try to get the game to go...the game-plan, strategy, etc.

Warmachine/Hordes Battle Report: Morghoul meets Hoarluk

After what seems like a long hiatus from Warma-Hordes, many of us in the local club Ordo Ineptus are starting to reacquaint ourselves with the game, and are loving it!

Battle Report: Dark Eldar versus Blood Angels!

I was lucky enough this past weekend to get two games in versus my friend and Ordo Ineptus clubmate Tim. Our first game was 2000 points 40k, with his Blood Angels facing off against my Dark Eldar. Our second was Hordes, with his Trollbloods going against my Skorne.

Battle Report: Dark Eldar vs. Imperial Fists!

I admit it: I've been neglecting my Planetary Empires painting duties; my terrain-building duties; and my Skorne painting duties. I have no excuse, other than I've been actually playing a lot of games!

I was lucky enough to have a very nice game against a very nice man that went by the online name Brother Captain Herald, using a very exciting Imperial Fist army!

In this game, I once again proved to myself that I'm REALLY good at forgeting the most important little details...

35 Point Steamroller Forces - Skorne!

I've decided which Hordes army I'll be leading in the upcoming Steamroller event at Brothers Grim on Dec 3rd...Skorne!

I've made some changes to my originally intended force, but have a lot of painting to do if I want to have something that looks nice and pretty...

Blizzard in October = Hobby Time!

Yes, we had a blizzard. October 29th we got about a foot of snow, along with a ton of wind. Many trees came down (the leaves hadn't finished falling, so lots of capacity to catch weight!), and lots of lines are down. My house still has power, but no internet, cable-TV, or phone.

My wife was dead-set on participating in Bethel Town Center's Trick-or-Treat, though, so the kids were stuffed in to their costumes with an extra layer of clothing and thrown out in to the blizzard.

Daddy, look...it's snowing!

Finesse Army: How can we make it work?

Yesterday I started talking (out of my butt!) about my concept of what a "Finesse Army" is, and how it can compare to some other armies. I wanted to continue discussing it today, with emphasis on how I apply my concept of Finesse Army to maintain competitiveness.

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Dark Eldar: What does "Finesse Army" mean?

I had a discussion with Kirby of 3++ last night while we were watching folks play WM/H. I was brain-dumping some thoughts that came in to my head between my own experiences playing my Dark Eldar, some things that I've heard (and read) on 11th Company about the relatively low "competitive" level of the Dark Eldar, and thoughts on building a Grey Knight army...

Steamroller! 35 points of Warmachine / Hordes

One of my favorite tournament venues: Brothers Grim on Long Island is hosting a 35 point Steamroller event on December 3rd! I'm pretty excited, as I've been wanting to try out a WM/H tournament, and this sounds great to me. Brothers Grim is a great place with great people, I always have a good time there...what better place to lose my WM/H Tournament virginity?

The question is, what army should I bring?

My Army: Unit Analysis, Changes, and goals

I wanted to do a more detailed look at how I felt the components of my army worked in the first two tournaments I've taken them to and discuss what changes I think I realistically need to make, as well as discuss what I'll do to go down to 1750.

Baron Sexy!

Battle for Salvation Wrap-up: Thoughts on the event, my army, and anything else...

It's been over a week since the tournament, but I'm still going over things in my mind. What I could have done different, who I wanted to play, where I ate dinner, the part at the hotel, etc...

BFS Day 2: The Final Battle!

I came to the realization after that last game that hey, I'm not doing too bad! Despite a bone-head move (or lack of move!) in Game 3, and a snooze-to-lose game 4, I was playing pretty decent Warhammer and my army was able to do exactly what I wanted it to do: give opponents lots of bad choices and punish them for them!

I was dismayed, however, to see that my opponent was an army that I've had a mental block against while playing on Vassal: Deathwing!

A mean army, and he's far more organized than I am!

BFS Day 2: Game 6

I think we had a lunch break in there...Subway hit the spot, I got a Mt. Dew (or two) and went back in to the ring for another game!

And guess what...I got to fight ANOTHER Logan led Space Wolf army full of Wolf Guard, Cyclones, and Long Fangs. Weeee!!!

BFS Day 2: Game 5

I had a horrible night in the hotel Saturday night. I'm a pretty light sleeper, so things that many folks sleep right thru keep me up. There was a party going on in the hotel. The party itself was no big deal, but it was between multiple rooms, with people opening and closing doors and hooting and hollering in the hallway until 2am. My second trip down to the lobby to talk to the staff, the guy I'm speaking to is telling me that he'll take care of it, it will be no problem...but he's taking cups and buckets of ice up to the room! Hello, dickhead...you're not helping, here! I got a bit short with the guy, asking him if this was a hotel or a night club. When I told him my next call would not be to the front desk, but to the police, he finally started taking it a bit more serious, and the party wound down shortly after.

BFS Game 4

This won't be much of a battle report. I was so tired and worn out, my adrenaline rush from Game 3 wore off. I pounded Coffee and Mt. Dew, but I was just simply not here for this game. I apologize to you all, this one will barely be worth reading. I also apologize to Sean Nayden, my opponent...I didn't put up much of a struggle, didn't make it a very fun game, and in fact I literally fell asleep at least two times during his movement.

BFS: Game 3

There was a lunch break in there somewhere, but I don't even remember what we ate or who it was with. I was a complete zombie going in to game 3 already...I was concerned that I'd gotten so fatigued so quickly and still was only halfway thru the first day!

My next opponent was Stephen from 11th Company. He is SUCH a great guy and wonderful opponent. I've never had a "serious" game of 40k...hell, of any game...that was so competitive but at the same time so much fun. We laughed and joked and had a blast while still doing our damnedest to kill each other...and isn't that what it's all about!

Battle for Salvation: Day 0 and 1

Thursday night before the event my wonderful wife again helped me with the painting. We were down to edging on everything and some odds and ends. I learned my old trusty display board was too small to fit this army, so I was going with just a giant tupperware box with old foam stuffed in it....thanks again to the missus for the help there!

Nice leg!

Battle for Salvation over!

I just got home from a gruelling two days! I had a wonderful time, met a lot of great people including Neil and Stephen from 11th Company Podcast; Mike Brandt of Nova, and many other wonderful people.

Details will be coming in a few days as I download both my camera and my brain, but a brief summary now while I'm winding down getting ready for bed.

Skipping to the end, the results...

List breakdown: why I chose what I chose!

The wife helped me paint again last night, and I’m happy to say that everything is done except the edging and canopies on the Venoms, which we intend to finish both together tonight! Teamwork! I got no useable pictures last night, but will get some of the whole army done as soon as I’m able! I sure wish I had a good way to thank my wife…she’s added so much to the army with the details that I would not have even thought about doing!

Who the hell spams Reavers?!

So about my army….frankly, the list…I stole it.

Monday Painting: Help Arrives!

My wonderful missus made the mistake of showing some interest in my army last night, and ended up blowing off her college work to help me with some details that I'd not intended to do!

My, what cute little dolls you have!

Weekend painting...just 4 (and a half) painting days to go!

I didn't get as much done this weekend as I would have liked, but the situation isn't horrible!

Hellions: basecoat only.

Seven Days to Go!

I got a fair amount done last night, here's a few snapshots of things as they are...

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Incubi & Urien...almost done!

Eight painting days left!

The Incubi just need to get their bases painted after the sand dries, and Urien needs the same plus some touch ups here and there and a little more work on the skin on his freak-arms. Here's a few photos of how things have worked out!

Battle Report - Bobby's Ultramarines vs. Daddy's Orks!

He's been helping Daddy play for many years, and has had some simple games, but now we're diving in to real game rules, mechanics, and starting to learn really how to play!
Yes, it's a kid's train table...perfect!

Dark Eldar Painting: Work in Progress

Well, here it is less than 2 weeks from the tournament, and I'm not even three-color legal yet. It's going to be a lot of long painting nights ahead to get these guys done to the level I want them to be!

I did come up with a relatively fast way to do the Incubi that will not only get them pretty in a relatively short time, but make them stand out amongst my army.

Bones!

Not hobby related at all, but amusing and I wanted to share.

They're installing a security system around the outdoor facility where I work. While digging to put in the cabling, they unearthed a bone:

Is it human? Deer? Space Alien? Hard to say...I'm contacting the police in case it's the former: if it were my missing kid, I'd like to know!

Gaming, Etc Tournament, Stratford CT

My first tournament with the Baron! Many of my Ordo brothers and I took the arduous 1 hour journey to Stratford on Sunday to play in their 1750 tournament. There were about 20 people playing (I think it was 10 tables?), and 8 of us were from Ordo! Awesome!

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Battle Report: 1750 Dark Eldar vs. Ultramarines

My good friend Rodrigo and I are preparing for a 1750 tournament next weekend at Gaming, Etc in Stratford, CT. I've never been to this venue, but am told it's a nice place to play with nice people, and it's only about 45 minutes from home!

The expected format is ~30 players, 3 games at 2.5 hours each at 1750 points. They do not require full painting, but give extra points for fully painted, based, wysiwyg, and I think there was a free point for bringing a piece of terrain.

Kabal of the Blackened Sun vs Night Lords (counts as BA)

One of my Ordo brothers has been toying with this idea for awhile now: he loves Chaos Marines, hates the CSM codex, so wants to do Night Lords using the Blood Angels book. I LOVE his army concept...all Assault Marines backed up by some Devastators and some "elite" infantry. We were able to get a test game in, using mostly proxy for him, last Friday!

Baron Malagant's Kabal takes to the skies!

I've almost finished assembling all the new parts for my latest Dark Eldar force, and actually got it on the table for a game last week!

Quiet in gaming world...

My oldest son started Pop Warner Football in August. He's 7, and I think he's starting to regret the decision...football is a lot of work! His practices are every weekday from 6-8pm. Yikes! I've had almost no time for gaming, but have managed to get some Vassal time in.

How many Incubi?

My interest in Warhammer 40k has been slightly rekindled recently with the start of the Ordo campaign, me joining an online Ladder, and the proximity of a large tournament in October. I've shied away from Incubi in both the old and the new codex, but am determined now to use them and let the Wyches have a break!

So the question is, how many Incubi are needed?

"Hey, man...nice shoulder pads!"

Zaal vs Lich Lord Terminus...battle for your soul!

I've not had much time to actually finish games lately. This was done over two days with a good friend from Ordo. When he described his list to me I was terrified, I had no idea how I'd chew through that many guys, get to Terminus, and actually be able to kill him.

But then I re-read his Feat, and re-read Zaal's "Direct Spirits" rule, and I realized that Zaal is a really bad matchup for Terminus!
He wants your soul...but Zaal wants it more!

Kabal of the Blackened Sun

There are two 2000 points 40k events coming up in my are, and while I'd much rather play Warmachine or Flames of War, the Archon on me wants to capture some prisoners, too! I'm debating two different list builds, and here they are!

Absylonia meets Morghoul!

I was grumpy at the wife last night, so sat down and got on Vassal. I was very pleased to find a very nice person and get in a very enjoyable "pick-up game". We both started pulling out Skorne models, so I volunteered to switch to Legion (there's no way to differentiate who's Skorne is who's in Vassal, and I just didn't want the confusion), and pulled out my tried and true Absylonia force...

I still don't believe that's a man...

Back from Texas!

I'm back from a nice family vacation in San Antonio, Texas! I even took all my Hordes armies in hopes of trying out the Texas players!

Ordo Ineptus Escalation Tournament - 400 points

I'm going to try to do some short Battle Reports of the four great games played this past weekend. As usual, I failed to take any notes, pictures, or anything, so working off my feeble memory. Please forgive any errors, they're not intentional, just blame my age.

Weekend Painting: Gladiator & More

I got some time to work on my Gladiator and get started on some of the other Skorne guys this week. Here's a few photos to show the status...

Zaal vs. Zerkova, 35 points

Another battle report from a Vassal game, this time vs. a Khador warcaster I'd not yet faced: Zerkova!

Skorne Photos

Here's a few shots of the Karax and "Brute" done using the 'Mega-Army' method from No Quarter.

The Kabal is Reborn!

Ordo Ineptus is kicking off a 40k Summer Campaign this weekend with a four-stage escalation tournament! To participate, I'm dusting off my Dark Eldar (and my 40k rules knowledge!), and am hoping to collect some nice "trophies" to take back to Commorragh!

Back from Korea...for the last time?

Well, work things got very hectic there for awhile. I had another trip to Korea, but was able to bring my wife along! We had a great time, but it's good to be home and getting back to my gaming addiction!

With all the (over)time in Korea, I've been able to significantly add to my model collection, and I even bought a No Quarter magazine!

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Gaming at home!

I've been home from Korea for a week, and actually got to play some real games, on a real table...with dice and minis and everything! I'll be going back to Korea in a week or so, though...more Kimchi and Soju for me!

Here's a little update of what I've done gaming-wise the last week or so...

Monday, May 2, 2011

I don't think her rack is THAT great...

Got a really fun game in tonight on Vassal against a nice guy in Malaysia named Tekanan (well, at least that's his Vassal name...)and his Pirate Queen Skarre led Cryx force. Lessons learned tonight: dice are weird, and apparently her boobs are lethal!!

Friday, April 29, 2011

Absylonia meets The Warwitch

Jason was kind enough to get up early to meet me on Vassal for a nice game. Despite the early hour for him and the late hour for me, we had a great time, both of us trying new lists and struggling to remember what all our new toys do. :)

PLUS

EQUALS AWESOME!

More Vassal from Korea!

I'd been daydreaming about using a Raek all day, so when I got home I ran straight to Vassal to try to find a game. It took only a short while to find one against a nice chap named JivesTheButler. I asked, and he confirmed that he was not indeed currently employed in that branch of the service industry. He was, however, fielding a formidible array of armoured meanies...

Monday, April 25, 2011

The Legion grows...

I've been enjoying playing the Legion. The armies I've used have a playstyle that really suits me: fast, fragile, with lots of damage output (both ranged and melee).

Sunday, April 3, 2011

Another Vassal game, another post

I decided that since I can't sleep in this hotel bed anymore, I might as well stay up and play vassal! This time a game against a frighteningly shooty Cygnar army!

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Can I really only manage one post every 6 months?

Yes, apparently that's the case.

Lots of real-life issues, and precious little gaming the last half-year. I'm in Korea on business, 10 more days. Every now and then I find time for a Vassal game, this time I got some Warmachine/Hordes!
